- Fines: Vehicle owners may incur monetary fines for late registration, the amount of which varies depending on the duration of the delay and the type of vehicle.
- Additional Fees: In addition to fines, late registrants may be required to pay additional fees or surcharges imposed by the LTO.
- Compounding Penalties: Failure to register your car promptly can result in compounding penalties, with the amount increasing the longer the registration remains overdue.
The penalties for late car registration vary depending on the extent of the delay:
- Weekly Penalty: Missing the registration renewal window by a few days incurs a ₱200 penalty. This serves as a gentle reminder to settle the registration as soon as possible.
- Late Registration Fee: If your car registration lapses within the same year (based on the plate’s ending number), you’ll be charged a penalty equivalent to 50% of your Motor Vehicle User’s Charge (MVUC). The MVUC is a fee based on your car’s engine displacement and model year.
- More Than a Year Overdue: Letting your car registration lapse for over a year comes with steeper penalties. You’ll need to pay the 50% MVUC penalty on top of the renewal fee and might even face additional charges depending on the LTO branch.

The LTO doesn’t just put random letters and numbers on your license plate to look like the person who issued it. There is a number that tells you exactly what day you need to register your car.
Let’s say your license plate number is ABC 1234. You have to register your car in April (since the last number is 4) between the first and seventh days of the month (since the second to the last number is 3). This rule applies to all plate numbers, no matter what shape or arrangement they are in.
Additionally, the LTO has just introduced a new online appointment system for registering vehicles. A designated lane will be assigned to you if you make your appointment online. You can register your motor vehicle quickly using the designated lane.
