End-of-Trip Cycling Facilities Launched in Quezon City

Cycling is one of the most popular means of transportation in Quezon City, for students as well as workers. Fortunately, the city government continues to create infrastructure and facilities for cyclists, including bicycle lanes, and now… end-of-trip facilities.

On Monday (July 29, 2024), Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, together with Department of Transportation (DOTr) Assistant Secretary James Melad and other officials, formally launched an end-of-trip cycling facility at the Quezon City Hall Compound. Similar facilities can be found in different parts of the city.

Based on a report by Radyo Pilipinas, there are currently 15 sets of short-term, end-of-trip (EOT) cycling facilities in different locations around Quezon City. Each facility features a bicycle shed, bike racks, and a bike repair station.

The EOT cycling facilities can be found in the Quezon City Hall Compound, Polytechnic University of the Philippines – Quezon City, Ismael Mathay Sr. High School, Veterans Memorial Medical Center, Lung Center of the Philippines, and Amoranto Sports Complex.

The project aims to boost support for cyclists and to promote cycling as a sustainable mode of transportation in the city. According to Mayor Belmonte, these facilities are part of the city’s “Active Transportation Program.”

Cycling: An Alternative Mode of Transport

Last year, the Quezon City Council issued Resolution No. SP-9246, S-2023, entitled “A Resolution Strongly Urging the Business Establishments in Quezon City to Provide End-of-trip Facilities in Support of the Active Transportation Program of the City.”

Notably, the Active Transportation Program is implemented through Ordinance No. SP-2988, S-2020, which is also known as the “Quezon City Safe Cycling and Active Transport Ordinance of 2020.” As the name says, this ordinance promotes cycling as an alternative mode of transportation in the city. It also involves the creation of the Bicycle and Active Transport Section under the Department of Public Order and Safety – Green Transport Office.

Meanwhile, Resolution No. SP-9246, S-2023 states that the provision of End-of-Trip facilities like showers, changing facilities, free drinking stations, and bicycle racks will encourage more workers to use bicycles as active transportation. This will result in a more inclusive environment and greater productivity among workers — ultimately contributing to Quezon City’s economic growth.

Aside from End-of-Trip cycling facilities, the local government of Quezon City has also established safe bicycle lanes across the city — a total of 300 kilometers in length, in fact. Moreover, the local government continuous to provide support for cyclists through various programs (e.g. distribution of helmets and bicycles).

Final Thoughts

Thanks to the newly-launched end-of-trip facilities, perhaps we’ll be seeing more cyclists in Quezon City. After all, cycling is not just a sustainable means of transport, but also a type of physical activity that’s good for our health!

In other news, we can all look forward to bigger and better transportation facilities soon! Just last week, President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. declared during his third State of the Nation Address (SONA) that the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) will soon be a world-class international airport. Sounds awesome!
