As a result of the Land Transportation Office’s (LTO) aggressive campaign against unregistered vehicles, a total of 10,461 motor vehicles were apprehended for the month of June 2024. This is a reminder to all car owners to make sure your vehicle registration is renewed/updated.
According to LTO Chief, Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor D. Mendoza II, majority of the vehicles apprehended were motorcycles (6,284), followed by tricycles (1,787), private vans (954), private sedans (451), and trucks (230). The campaign is currently being implemented across the country.
LTO Apprehends More than 10K Vehicles Last Month
“Patunay lang ito na hindi titigil ang inyong LTO hangga’t hindi narerehistro ang lahat ng sasakyan dahil ito ay hindi lang obligasyon sa gobyerno bilang kapalit ng pagmamay-ari ng sasakyan kundi para sa kaligtasan ng lahat dahil ang kasama sa pagpaparehistro ang pag-inspect roadworthiness (This proves that the LTO won’t stop until all vehicles have registered, because this is not just an obligation to the government in exchange for vehicle ownership, but for everyone’s safety because registration includes inspection for roadworthiness),” Asst. Sec. Mendoza explained, as cited in a Facebook post by Land Transportation Office – Philippines.
“Ito ay alinsunod sa patuloy na pagsusulong ng ating DOTr Secretary Jaime J. Bautista na maging ligtas ang lahat ng road user sa ating bansa (This goes in line with the directive of our DOTr Secretary Jaime J. Bautista to ensure the safety of all road users in our country),” he added.
Out of the 10,461 motor vehicles that were apprehended last month, Asst. Sec. Mendoza revealed that 1,601 of them were impounded, whereas 9,212 of them were issued with traffic violation tickets.
Among the motor vehicles that were impounded, some were being used for public transportation purposes, but these did not have the necessary permits from the government. These vehicles are also known as “colorum.”
Previously, the LTO Chief issued a memorandum to Regional Directors, stating that a court order is necessary before releasing any motor vehicles that were apprehended and impounded during the agency’s anti-colorum drive.
Asst. Sec. Mendoza also shared: “Your LTO commits to the Filipino people that we will be aggressive in the campaign against colorum vehicles and unregistered motor vehicles because this is part of our mandate, which is to ensure that all road users are safe.”
Final Thoughts
In the Philippines, the problem of unregistered vehicles is a serious one, indeed. Let us remember that registration rules are in place for the LTO to ensure that our motor vehicles are safe to be used. In addition, we should know all traffic rules and regulations by heart, as part of being responsible and law-abiding motorists.
